How will this project impact the natural environment?

Protecting the diverse and sensitive natural, community and cultural environment within the US 301 Waldorf Area, while addressing local and regional transportation needs, will require extraordinary focus and effort. To meet this challenge, SHA is committed to avoiding and minimizing adverse impacts on all aspects of the environment and to foster positive improvement of the environment within the Waldorf area.

In addition, SHA is committed to implementing leading-edge methods to reduce environmental impacts. Examples include a commitment to bridging major stream and floodplain complexes, applying innovative storm water management techniques to protect surface water quality, and using an expert panel symposium to more fully predict potential land use development influences associated with US 301 transportation improvements.

Symbolizing SHA's commitment to the environment are initiatives that are above and beyond environmental considerations required by law. For this project, SHA is developing and funding an environmental stewardship program that will seek to improve natural, community and cultural resource needs in the Waldorf area - largely unrelated to the transportation improvements project - that may otherwise remain unaddressed. In essence, SHA is striving to address the transportation needs while improving the overall quality of the environment and community in the Waldorf area.
